Patriot Memory 16GB Bolt USB Flash DriveMay 7th, 2010 | By Simon
By default the Patriot Memory Bolt comes unsecure, anyone will have access to read or write the files found on the drive. In order to encrypt the drive you must run the built in software found on a second partition of the USB drive. The first time you load it you will see that there is no password associated with the drive and the status is unlocked. I will state it now, the Bolt security program is meant only for Windows’ based operating system.
From here you can create a password for the Bolt and once you remove the flash drive from your USB port or the computer goes into suspend mode, the drive will automatically encrypt itself.
If you press the lock button the device will lock. Here you can now see that the drive has a password and is locked.
If you enter the correct password the drive will unlock. You will have ten opportunties to unlock the Bolt, if on the tenth try you fail the Bolt will format itself.
If you check your Windows Explorer the name of the drive will change Removable Disk to PATRIOT when the device is unlocked.
This covers everything you need to know about how to set a password to secure your data and regain access to it. I don’t want to spend too much time about it, but I’ll point out some information for those who want to know a little more about the 256-bit hardware encryption. For starters, Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) has been adopted by the US government as the encryption standard. You can learn about AES encryption from our good resource Wikipedia. The term hardware encryption basically means an embedded processor handles all the algorithms and it works in conjunction with Patriot Memory’s software to encrypt and decrypt the files. In comparison, with software encryption a program stored on a separate partition of the USB drive generates and save the algorithms. If someone were to obtain the algorithm and solve it they could gain access to the data. With the hardware encryption the password must first be entered before any data can be retrieved. One advantage with hardware encryption is that it is faster as there is no processing by your computer.
