The TV menu hasn’t changed very much and you have your basic options: picture, sound, channel, setup, input, application and support. There are three preset picture modes: standard, movie and dynamic. Each menu has a slightly different backlight, contrast, brightness and color adjustments. We’ll see in the next page what the difference is. The second page covers your sound features. The 46B550 utilizes two down-firing 10W speakers. The channel menu which I have accidentally skipped over lets you control your input modes, cable or antenna. If you wish to have parental restrictions imposed on the TV, this must be done though the Setup menu. The setup menu allows for language, time changes and parental controls – nothing too special here. The input menu just allows you to change your input from cable, HDMI, PC, etc. The application menu allows for control of Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC) and Media Play (USB). These two features are favourites to me; Anynet lets you control other Samsung devices and Media Play allows you to view media off the USB port. The last page is support and you can run diagnostics, software upgrades and view help files for the TV.

I mentioned that the 46B550 is capable of viewing media directly off a USB drive. I have certainly enjoyed using this feature on numerous Samsung TVs but Media Play varies from model to model which is rather unfortunate. In this particular version you can only view pictures or play songs. I’m pretty bummed that you can’t play videos as this is certainly more convenient than having to load up a DVD or Blu-ray disc.
