It wasn’t very long ago when Network Attached Storage devices were considered a luxury. When the market only had enterprise or small business models available at several hundred dollars apiece, the average user was left in the dark. Times have finally changed and NAS devices are becoming increasingly popular with home owners. A Synology DS210j would allow you to back up all your files and make it accessibly anywhere on the network. On top of that, the Disk Station Manager 2.2 has applications that can manage your downloads and share media for viewing pleasures.

Synology DS210j

With an introductory price of just $230, there is much value to be had. The Marvell processor and 128MB onboard memory is sufficient in preventing the hardware from bottlenecking JBOD or RAID performance. With typical write speeds in the mid-thirties and read speeds in the sixties you’ll have no problems streaming videos, backing up crucial work files and downloading via torrents all while drawing less power than a single light bulb. For anyone looking to join those with NAS devices, seriously consider the DS210j over any other introductory models.

    Advantages

  • Low power consumption
  • Carrying handle and spare screws are a nice touch
  • Marvell processor and onboard memory manages RAID performance with little overhead
  • Excellent performance for price
    Disadvantages

  • No hot-swapping capability

Thank you Synology for making this review possible.

  1. Quote : “Intel 1.066 Atom processor found in the 209+II”
Wrong, DS209+II has Freecsale mpc8533 PPC Processor, only DS710+ and DS1010+ have Intel Atom procs.
